This blog is intended to document personal learning adventures in the field of Interaction Design and also progression through a doctoral program in Communications Design.
I’m a Principal Artificial Intelligence Engineer with The MITRE Corporation. My academic background is as a computational linguist — discourse processing, primarily. But after starting up a human-centered design group at MITRE, I’ve begun to more specialize in applying principles of interaction design to Natural Language Processing. There is a very close relationship between human-human dialogue interaction and human-computer interaction.
Following the success of Apple and other companies that take design seriously, I believe systems engineering needs a transformation from a software development-centric process to a design-centric process where we focus on the needs of users — both end users and user developers. When computational linguists begin to apply these principles to language processing, we will see an era of renewed language technology growth.
Academic publications can be found here. There has been a bit of a hiatus in external publication for me as I pursue a new curriculum.
Here is my K9 SAR Blog.
